What type of Window Treatments Help With Privacy the Most?

April 30, 2018

Your home is your sanctuary, and if you think like most homeowners, getting window treatments in Chicago that give you privacy and sound control to maintain your castle is important to you. Any window treatment is preferable to a naked window. However there are some window treatments that add more privacy than others, even on specialty windows.

Providing Privacy on Hard to Cover Windows

All of the large, standard windows in your home are a snap to cover with nearly any window treatment like Chicago shutters, drapes, or blinds|.

You might encounter some situations when you need a specific type of window treatment to get the privacy you want. These might be:

  • Bathroom windows where excess moisture can ruin fabric window treatments.

  • Entryway sidelights that are long and skinny on which window treatments can be knocked around when the door opens or shuts.

  • Specialty-shape windows like eyebrows, circular windows, bay windows, etc., where normal store-bought blinds and curtains can’t cover your window without sacrificing the beauty of the window’s unique shape.

  • Large windows that are difficult to reach like second-story foyer windows.

In these cases, you’ll need window treatments that go the distance to provide privacy to your space.

As a plus, look for window treatments that can block sound to keep random noise outside and keep inside noise inside.

The Best Window Treatments for Privacy

The best window treatments for privacy that we recommend are Polywood® plantation shutters. Plantation shutters are able to be shut completely, for when blocking all the light and sound you can is what you need. If you want to let light in and see outdoors, just give the louvers a tilt. For high windows, you should keep the louvers tilted at an angle so light can enter but passersby can’t see in.

Interior shutters are also great for non-rectangular windows because they’re custom built to your exact dimensions. And since Polywood shutters are moisture resistant, they’re perfect for bathrooms.

Another privacy-friendly window treatment is roller shades. Roller shades take up very little space above the window, but are easily pulled down to prevent anyone being able to see in your home. While they can’t be custom-made to fit unique window shapes, you can find roller shapes made from moisture-resistant material for areas like your bathrooms.

Window Treatments that Don’t Make the Cut for Privacy

While any window covering gives you at least some privacy, there are two that might not get the job done. The first is sheer curtains. Sheer curtains were popular years ago and can add an airy feeling to a room. But they don’t offer the level of privacy of other window treatments, especially at night.

Another window covering we don’t recommend for privacy are aluminum or bulky blinds, which can break and/or get stuck at an angle. If you can’t completely close the blinds because of breakage, then they’re not helping keeping your home private.
