Chicago Home Fashion: Why Windows Are Important07/09/2018Richard Rampton When you think about remodeling your Chicago home, what are your priorities? New flooring? New furniture? Maybe new appliances or sparkling finished counters? What if we told you that you could make a bigger impact with less money by focusing on something else? What you might want to focus on first in your Chicago home design is your windows and window treatments. We’ll show you why. Natural Light Plays a Big Part We can’t say enough about how much natural light determines how your house looks and feels. look washed out and faded, no matter what your color scheme is. Too little light, and it might look drab and dim, and just plain unattractive. To make things worse, the angle that sunlight comes in changes as the day goes on, so there’s never going to be one perfect level of light throughout the day. To thwart this, look for window treatments that can alter light easily and quickly. Our recommendations are roller shades or plantation shutters. Windows Will Influence Other Parts Of Your Home You can move furniture. You can change lighting (somewhat). You can even remove parts of walls when you renovate. But windows are almost always there to stay, unless you’re willing to spend a lot of time and money. So what you should do is decide what role you want your windows to play, and then plan your design around that. Would you prefer the large windows were the focal center of the room? Open up the space around the window and install a window treatment with stunning, eye-catching colors to draw eyes in. Or would you prefer the windows to be an accent that helps support other parts of the room? In that case, install something like bright white Polywood shutters to lead your guests’ eyes through the space. No matter your preference, start with the windows, and go from there. Windows Are Your Home’s Eyes Yes, it’s cliche to call windows “the eyes of the home,” but that doesn’t make it not true. No matter the time of day, the eyes of passersby are drawn to the windows. Take advantage of that by putting in window treatments that play up your home’s features. These are a few ideas for that. Plantation shutters - The bright louvers and clean lines of shutters will actually make your window look larger than other choices. Accent drapes - Drapes that add flair to the top corners of your window can help create a beautiful silhouette when the sun sets and your indoor lights are on. Custom roller shades - Brightly colored or patterned shades drawn partway down your window can add some flair to your more neutral home exterior.
